An 18-year-old woman tragically lost her life after plummeting from a fifth-floor window of a New York University art building on Saturday evening, as per law enforcement reports. The incident occurred at the university’s Barney Building on Stuyvesant Street, a facility that accommodates the art department’s studios, classrooms, and offices.
The police were alerted to the incident around 7:30 p.m. following a distress call reporting a fall. Upon arrival, they discovered the young woman lying unconscious outside the building, her body bearing severe trauma from the fall. Emergency services promptly transported her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Subsequent investigations by the authorities confirmed that the woman had jumped from a window on the fifth floor of the six-story building. However, it remains uncertain whether the woman was a student at the university.
An eyewitness account from a local resident, Justina Sung, 30, revealed that she heard a loud thump and a girl’s scream from her nearby apartment at the time of the incident. Sung’s roommate reportedly learned from a passerby that the woman had jumped and landed in a small, fenced green space adjacent to the building, located at the intersection of 9th and Stuyvesant Streets.
The police cordoned off a blood-stained area just outside the fencing for further investigation. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing their grief and concern over the tragic event. As the investigation continues, the university community and local residents are left grappling with the tragic loss of a young life.
