Man killed roommate over $10 at party

Perry Hughes, a 34-year-old man from Tennessee, was arrested on Tuesday for the alleged fatal shooting of one of his roommates. Hughes was charged with second-degree murder, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and tampering with evidence.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers from the Memphis Police Department responded to a shooting call at a residence located in the 1500 block of Prescott Street. Two people living in the residence told the officers that a fight had broken out between Hughes and his roommate, Antonio, over $10 while celebrating a third roommate’s birthday.

When officers arrived, they found Hughes barricaded in his bedroom. After a short stand-off, the officers placed him in custody. Inside the bedroom, they found Antonio’s body in a city trash bin, upside down and covered in trash. Two handguns were in plain view and the floor of the hallway was wet and appeared to have been recently mopped.

Police obtained a search warrant and found multiple cartridge casings in the kitchen, three bullet holes in the walls, and blood on the hallway baseboards and bathroom floor. Three guns, two 9 mm pistols and one 22-caliber handgun, as well as a mop with a bloody head, were found in Hughes’ bedroom.

Roommates told police that an argument had escalated and both men had pointed weapons at each other. Antonio had put down his weapon and tried to fight Hughes, but Hughes allegedly fired multiple shots and “unloaded on” Antonio.

Hughes was convicted of felony aggravated assault in 2014 and is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
