Police are preparing a report for the coroner after the woman died early Sunday near the Rosemont Hotel in central Adelaide.
ADELAIDE, Australia — A woman in her 20s died early Sunday after falling from a balcony at a hotel in central Adelaide, authorities said, as police ruled out suspicious circumstances and began preparing a report for the coroner.
South Australia Police said officers and emergency services were called about 4:10 a.m. Nov. 1 to a hotel at the corner of Hindley and Morphett streets after receiving reports that a woman had fallen from a balcony. SA Ambulance paramedics treated her at the scene, but she died. Police did not publicly identify the woman in their statement.
The incident occurred at the Rosemont Hotel in Adelaide’s central business district, according to local news reports. People reported that the woman had been spending Halloween with friends before the fall. Several news organizations said she had been attempting to climb an exterior drainpipe, although that detail was not included in the initial South Australia Police statement.
A witness, Josh Hughes, told Australian media that he was nearby when he heard what sounded like a pipe breaking. Hughes said he went to the woman and called for an ambulance after realizing she was unresponsive. His account was reported by several outlets, including People and 7NEWS.
Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. Authorities did not provide additional information about what led to the fall or explain whether investigators had reached a final conclusion about its cause. A report will be prepared for the coroner, who can examine the circumstances of the death.
Police also said members of the public may have recorded the incident. Investigators asked anyone with relevant footage to provide it to authorities and specifically urged people not to distribute video of the woman’s death on social media or through other channels out of respect for her and her family.
SafeWork SA investigators also attended the scene Sunday. The workplace safety agency told ABC News it responded because of initial reports concerning the nature of the incident and was continuing to make inquiries. The agency did not provide further details about the scope of that work.
An area near the Rosemont Hotel was cordoned off as authorities examined the scene. ABC News reported that police and SafeWork SA personnel were present outside the Hindley Street venue Sunday morning. Local reporting also showed that flowers and other tributes were later left near the site.
As of Monday, police had not released the woman’s name or announced any criminal investigation connected to her death. The matter remains subject to the coroner’s process, while SafeWork SA continues its inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
