Police said surveillance footage led investigators to believe the deaths were a murder-suicide involving two people who knew each other.
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — An adult man and woman were found dead Sunday afternoon outside an Amazon fulfillment center in Virginia Beach, and police said surveillance footage led investigators to believe the shooting was a murder-suicide.
Officers responded at about 2:30 p.m. Nov. 1 to a report of a shooting in the 1800 block of Twin Mills Road, off Dam Neck Road, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department. Police found the two people dead after arriving at the scene. Investigators said there was no continuing threat to the public, but the circumstances surrounding the deaths remained under investigation Sunday evening.
Police Deputy Chief Jeff Wilkerson said investigators reviewed surveillance footage covering the outside of the facility. That video led detectives to their preliminary conclusion that the shooting was a murder-suicide. Police also determined that the man and woman were at least acquaintances, though officials had not established or publicly disclosed the full nature of their relationship. Their identities had not been released.
The two people were outside the Amazon facility in a picnic lunch area when the shooting occurred, according to local reporting citing police. Authorities had not confirmed whether either person worked for Amazon. Police also had not publicly announced a motive or provided further details about what happened immediately before the shooting.
Employees inside the facility were affected by the police response. One worker told local television reporters that employees were placed on lockdown for more than an hour while investigators worked at the scene. Workers were later allowed to enter the building to retrieve their belongings before being sent home for the remainder of the day.
Amazon spokesperson Lex Evans said the company was deeply saddened by the deaths and was providing direct support to the affected families. The company also made counseling services available to employees. Amazon said the Virginia Beach facility would remain closed for at least 24 hours and that employees would be paid for shifts missed during the closure. The company said it was cooperating with law enforcement.
The initial account of the shooting contained fewer details. Police first confirmed only that officers had responded to Twin Mills Road and found an adult man and woman dead. Authorities said at the time that there was no ongoing danger to the public. Later information from investigators, including their review of surveillance footage, provided the basis for treating the case as an apparent murder-suicide.
Wilkerson said investigators were still working to determine the circumstances that brought the two people together at the facility and what led to the shooting. Police had not released their ages, hometowns or other identifying information. Officials also had not said whether investigators were examining any prior incidents involving the pair.
The deaths occurred outside the Amazon building rather than inside the fulfillment center. Police continued processing the scene and examining the relationship between the two people Sunday afternoon and evening. No additional injuries were reported, and authorities did not announce a search for another suspect.
The Virginia Beach Police Department said the investigation remained active and ongoing. Further information about the identities of the man and woman, their relationship and the circumstances leading to the shooting had not been publicly released as of Sunday night.
