A devastating accident on Texas’s Interstate 20 on Saturday resulted in five fatalities. The accident was allegedly caused by a truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel of his 18-wheeler, leading to a pileup involving two other semi-trucks and three cars.
The driver, identified as 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez‑Companioni, is now facing charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Texas Department of Safety. Gonzalez‑Companioni is currently detained with a bond set at $1.5 million. Texas DPS Sgt. Kyle Bradford confirmed that Gonzalez‑Companioni admitted to dozing off while driving, but further investigations are still underway.
The accident took place in Kaufman County, where Gonzalez‑Companioni was heading west on I-20. Traffic had stopped near the Hiram Road bridge when Gonzalez‑Companioni’s truck reportedly crashed into the stationary vehicles. Witnesses at the scene described the collision as a “big boom.”
Among the vehicles involved was a Ford F-150 carrying five passengers. Four of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fifth was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Another death occurred in the subsequent pileup.
After the initial collision, Gonzalez-Companioni’s truck is reported to have swerved into two other 18-wheelers, causing one to jackknife and collide with four other passenger vehicles. The aftermath of the accident left other drivers on the road visibly distressed, with some retreating to a nearby RV resort to contact the police and collect themselves.
Emergency services described the scene as “horrific,” declaring it a “mass casualty” event. Traffic was stopped in both directions as first responders attended to the injured. Among the vehicles involved were a Jeep Compass, Ford Mustang, and a Honda passenger vehicle. The fifth fatality was a passenger in the Compass.
The identities of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin are notified, according to Sgt. Bradford. Further updates on the incident are expected to be released on Monday afternoon.
