Teen Found Dead Inside Vehicle on Busy Freeway

Mesa police are investigating after Salt River officers found a 16-year-old boy dead inside a vehicle near Chaparral Road.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A 16-year-old boy was found dead inside a vehicle early Oct. 16 on the northbound Loop 101 Pima Freeway near Chaparral Road after officers were called to a reported shooting, authorities said.

Salt River Police Department officers responded at about 1:40 a.m. and found the teenager dead in the vehicle. Mesa police later said preliminary evidence indicated the boy had suffered a suspected gunshot wound. His name had not been publicly released as of Tuesday, and authorities had not announced information about a possible suspect.

Mesa Police Department detectives are leading the investigation. Authorities have released few details about what happened before officers reached the vehicle, leaving several key questions unanswered. Police have not publicly said where the shooting began, whether the vehicle was moving when the gunfire occurred or whether anyone else was inside it.

The incident unfolded on the Loop 101 near Chaparral Road in the Scottsdale area, close to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Salt River police initially handled the response. The FBI also assisted because the investigation involved tribal land, Salt River police told local news outlets. Phoenix police and Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers also assisted during the initial response.

The investigation disrupted freeway traffic for much of Friday morning. The northbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Chaparral Road was closed while investigators worked at the scene. The northbound on-ramp from Indian School Road was also closed during the investigation. The restrictions were lifted and the ramps reopened shortly before 10:30 a.m., according to reports citing transportation and law enforcement officials.

Authorities have not publicly described a possible motive or said whether investigators believe the teenager was specifically targeted. They also have not released information about possible witnesses, a suspect vehicle or evidence recovered from the scene. Those details remain unknown as detectives continue trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.

The teenager has been identified publicly only by his age and sex. Police have not released information about where he lived, his school or his family. The limited disclosure is consistent with the victim being a minor and with the investigation remaining active.

Early reports on Oct. 16 described the victim’s condition as unknown while officers remained at the freeway scene. Police later confirmed that the victim was a 16-year-old boy who had been found dead inside the vehicle. Subsequent reports identified Mesa police as the agency leading the continuing investigation.

No arrest or suspect description had been announced in the latest reports reviewed Tuesday. Mesa police continued to classify the case as an active investigation, and authorities had not released additional details explaining what led to the reported shooting.
