A tragic incident unfolded in the Loop, Chicago, on the evening of Friday, Nov. 21, when two separate shootings resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuries to eight other teenagers. The shootings occurred amidst the city’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Millennium Park, which had attracted thousands of attendees.
The city officials and police reported that the violent incidents followed a night of heavy pedestrian activity downtown, as holiday events filled the streets and sidewalks. The shootings prompted a significant response from patrol officers already assigned to the area and paramedics who transported the injured to local hospitals. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made, and police were investigating whether the two attacks were related.
The first shooting took place around 9:50 p.m. along North State Street near East Madison Street. Officers on patrol reported seeing a large group before hearing shots and observing people fleeing the scene. Seven teenagers, ranging in age from 13 to 17, were injured and later listed in good to fair condition at local hospitals with wounds to their legs, hips, and torso.
Less than an hour later, a second shooting occurred near South Dearborn and West Adams streets, approximately three blocks away. An unidentified teenage boy was shot multiple times and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. An 18-year-old man also suffered a leg wound and was hospitalized in serious condition.
Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the media on Saturday, expressing his concern over the incidents. He announced that the city had already deployed about 700 additional officers and community violence interrupters for the holiday weekend and would deploy 300 more on Saturday night for the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. Five guns were recovered from the scenes, according to the mayor.
Alderman Brian Hopkins reported on social media that groups of youths were causing disturbances downtown and that some officers were injured, although the police did not immediately confirm the number or severity of these injuries. Detectives have not yet identified any suspects, and investigators were reviewing surveillance footage and collecting shell casings from both blocks.
The shootings occurred after a festive tree-lighting ceremony at Millennium Park, a few blocks east of the crime scenes, and near other seasonal attractions including Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza and shows at the Chicago Theatre on State Street. The city has periodically witnessed large youth gatherings since spring 2023 that have occasionally led to vandalism or fights.
As of Sunday afternoon, additional police officers remained on corners around State, Dearborn, and Adams while shoppers returned to downtown. Visitors navigated around chalk marks and drying rain near storefronts still bearing tape residue from the previous night’s incidents. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with sirens echoing from every direction and officers rushing to secure the area.
As of Sunday evening, no one was in custody, and detectives planned to continue their investigations overnight. Officials said the next update is expected on Monday, Nov. 24, when police typically release weekend violence summaries. The city’s holiday security plan remains in effect through the Lights Festival and Thanksgiving week.
