Police say a guest staying in the victim’s apartment is accused of slashing his throat and stabbing him repeatedly during what had appeared to be a routine evening.
ALBERTVILLE, Ala. — An Alabama man is recovering after authorities say a guest he had recently befriended suddenly attacked him inside his apartment on June 12, slashing his throat and stabbing him numerous times during an evening that began with cooking dinner and watching television.
Investigators say the case has drawn attention because of the abrupt and violent nature of the alleged attack. The victim, 30-year-old Jonathan Blake Chaney, survived despite severe injuries and was able to fight back before police arrived. Authorities arrested 25-year-old Nicolas Trombetta and charged him with attempted murder. Trombetta remains jailed without bond as investigators continue reviewing evidence gathered from the apartment.
According to authorities and Chaney’s account, the two men had met recently and Chaney had allowed Trombetta to stay at his apartment for several days. On the evening of June 12, the pair were spending time together inside the apartment complex in Albertville. Chaney later said they were cooking steaks, watching television and discussing plans to go kayaking the next day. He described the evening as relaxed and ordinary. Then, without warning, he said the encounter turned violent. Chaney recalled being caught off guard when his throat was cut. As he attempted to reach for his phone, he said the attack escalated. “I was caught off guard,” Chaney said in a television interview, describing how the evening shifted suddenly from a casual dinner to a fight for survival. He said he immediately realized the seriousness of his injuries and began trying to defend himself.
Police said the struggle continued throughout the apartment as both men fought over control of the knife. Chaney told reporters that his focus during the attack was simply staying alive. He said he repeatedly told himself that he could not die that way. Investigators reported that he eventually managed to gain control of the weapon and resist the assault. Officers responding to the scene found both men still at the apartment. Authorities said Chaney had suffered the more severe injuries. During the investigation, officers located a kitchen knife covered in blood inside a bedroom. Detectives also began documenting the physical evidence throughout the residence to determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive and have not indicated that an argument occurred before the alleged attack. Investigators say that remains one of the key unanswered questions in the case.
The investigation also uncovered details that may become important as the criminal case proceeds. According to an investigator, a camera positioned inside the apartment had the potential to capture the attack. However, authorities said the device had been turned away from its normal position roughly two hours before the violence occurred. Investigators are examining whether any video footage remains available and whether the camera’s movement was connected to the alleged assault. The discovery added another layer to a case already marked by unusual circumstances. Chaney’s survival has also become a central part of the story. Victims who suffer major neck wounds and multiple stab injuries often face life-threatening blood loss, making investigators’ accounts of his ability to continue fighting and communicate with officers especially notable. Authorities have not released detailed medical information regarding his recovery, but Chaney has publicly discussed the attack while continuing to heal from his injuries.
The criminal case now moves into the court system. Trombetta has been charged with attempted murder, a serious felony offense under Alabama law. Prosecutors are expected to rely on physical evidence collected from the apartment, statements provided by the victim, observations made by responding officers and any digital or video evidence recovered during the investigation. Court records show Trombetta is being held in the Marshall County Jail without bond. Additional hearings are expected as prosecutors and defense attorneys begin preparing their cases. Investigators have not announced whether further charges could be filed. Authorities also have not disclosed whether they believe the attack was planned in advance or whether it developed from circumstances that remain unknown. Those questions may be addressed as evidence is presented in future court proceedings.
Neighbors and community members have expressed shock at the allegations because the encounter appeared to begin as a routine social gathering. The details released by investigators paint a picture of an ordinary evening interrupted by sudden violence. Chaney’s comments have provided the clearest public description of what happened inside the apartment. He described relying on instinct during the struggle and refusing to give up despite severe injuries. His account has drawn attention because of the dramatic contrast between the evening’s planned activities and the alleged attack that followed. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains active and that many details have yet to be fully explained. For now, investigators continue reviewing evidence while prosecutors pursue the attempted murder case through the courts.
As of the latest update, Chaney remains alive and recovering from his injuries, while Trombetta remains in custody. The next major milestone in the case is expected to come through upcoming court proceedings, where investigators and prosecutors may provide additional details about what led to the alleged attack.
