Authorities say an armed husband forced his way into a home before a deadly hourslong barricade situation.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A domestic violence incident in north San Antonio ended in tragedy Friday when an armed man allegedly forced his way into a home, fatally shot his estranged wife, wounded a responding police officer and later died by suicide after a standoff that lasted several hours.
Police identified the dead adults as Brianna Nicole Richter and Albert Nixon Richter IV. The confrontation drew a large response from patrol officers, SWAT teams, negotiators and emergency medical crews in the Stone Oak area. Investigators are reviewing physical evidence, witness accounts and prior domestic violence allegations connected to the couple as they continue to reconstruct the events leading to the shooting.
Officers were dispatched around midday Friday to a residence on Red Hawk Ridge near Hardy Oak Boulevard after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a firearm. According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, Albert Richter arrived armed with a handgun and entered the home through a glass door. Once inside, authorities said, he fatally shot Brianna Richter, who police described as his estranged or soon-to-be estranged wife. The suspect then barricaded himself inside a room as officers responded. “He gets inside, kills his estranged or soon-to-be estranged wife, and barricades himself in one of the rooms,” McManus said during a public briefing. What began as a domestic violence call quickly escalated into a large tactical operation as officers secured the neighborhood, evacuated some nearby residents and attempted to establish communication with the suspect.
Authorities said the suspect fired at least one round toward responding officers after police arrived. One bullet struck a San Antonio police officer below his protective vest and above his belt. The officer, described as a seven-year veteran of the department, was transported to a hospital and underwent surgery. McManus later said the injuries were not considered life-threatening because no vital organs were struck. Police did not immediately release the officer’s identity. During the standoff, negotiators used loudspeakers in an effort to communicate with the suspect. Officers later deployed tear gas before entering the residence at approximately 3 p.m. Inside, they found both Albert Richter and Brianna Richter dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators recovered a pistol from the scene. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled Brianna Richter’s death a homicide and Albert Richter’s death a suicide.
The incident unfolded in a residential section of Stone Oak near Hardy Oak Elementary School and Lopez Middle School. Authorities said two children were inside the home when the violence occurred. Although reports varied on their exact ages, officials said both children were safely removed from the residence and suffered no physical injuries. Neighbor Randall Ashmore said he watched officers escort the children away from the scene and recalled seeing an officer appear to shield them while moving them to safety. The case has renewed attention on the dangers associated with domestic violence situations, particularly when firearms and relationship separations are involved. Family Violence Prevention Services President and CEO Marta Parda Pelaez said domestic violence frequently follows patterns of escalating control and can become especially dangerous when a relationship is ending.
Investigators are also examining reports of prior domestic violence allegations involving the couple. Records referenced in local reporting indicated Albert Richter had previously been accused of choking, striking and pointing a firearm at Brianna Richter during an April incident. Authorities initially said they had not found a history of domestic violence calls involving the suspect within county records. Later reporting, however, referenced arrest warrants and affidavits tied to earlier assault allegations. Officials have not fully explained the disposition of those cases. Because Albert Richter died at the scene, prosecutors are not expected to pursue criminal charges related to Brianna Richter’s death. Detectives continue to review witness statements, officer reports and evidence recovered from the residence. Police have also said they were examining whether the suspect had any gang affiliations, though no findings have been announced.
Residents watched a substantial law enforcement response develop throughout the afternoon as tactical teams established a perimeter around the home. Patrol vehicles, emergency medical units and specialized officers filled nearby streets while negotiators worked to end the standoff peacefully. The shooting marked the second time during the same week that a San Antonio police officer had been shot while responding to a call. Community members expressed concern for the wounded officer and for the children who witnessed the violence. Authorities have not disclosed where the children were taken following the incident or what long-term arrangements may be made for their care. Investigators remained at the residence for hours after the standoff ended, documenting the scene and collecting evidence as part of the continuing inquiry.
As of the latest update, authorities said the wounded officer was recovering and the investigation remained active. Detectives are expected to continue reviewing evidence, prior records and response reports while the medical examiner completes remaining case documentation.
