A Michigan charter school teacher, known for her work at a school that prioritizes moral virtues, has been accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a student. The teacher reportedly disclosed the inappropriate relationship to a colleague, who then alerted authorities.
Jocelyn Sanroman, a 26-year-old resident of Pontiac, is facing charges of third-degree sexual conduct with a 16-year-old male student. The alleged sexual misconduct occurred in 2023 when Sanroman was employed at Oakside Prep Academy, a charter school located in Waterford Township, approximately 30 miles northwest of downtown Detroit.
As of Monday morning, Sanroman had not yet been arraigned on the charges. However, her mugshot was released by Oakland County deputies. Sanroman reportedly confessed to another teacher about the sexual relationship with the student, leading the co-worker to inform the police.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald expressed her concern over the allegations, stating that the defendant is accused of exploiting her position of authority to take advantage of a minor. McDonald emphasized that such allegations represent a severe breach of trust that parents and the community place in educators.
McDonald, a former teacher herself, commended the teacher who reported the situation to the police, thereby potentially safeguarding other students from further exploitation.
If convicted of the third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge, Sanroman could face up to 15 years in prison.
Oakside Prep Academy is a part of the National Heritage Academies system. The school is known for its “Moral Focus” program, which aims to help students distinguish and appreciate the difference between right and wrong, according to the school’s website.
