A Mississippi woman was recently arrested after she was seen walking her toddler, clad only in a diaper, around a local Walmart in freezing temperatures. The incident, which was captured on video and subsequently went viral, led to the arrest of 26-year-old Kambria Gabrielle Darby on charges of child neglect. The arrest was made after local law enforcement received a call about the situation and found Darby in the store’s parking lot.
The video, which was recorded and posted on Facebook by a Walmart employee, showed Darby, who was appropriately dressed for the 20-degree weather, placing her scantily-clad toddler into a cold shopping cart. The video quickly gained traction online, sparking outrage and concern among viewers. The employee who recorded the incident, Felicia Darling, was reportedly fired for sharing the video on social media.
The footage also showed several shoppers at the Byram, Mississippi store confronting Darby. At one point, she was seen in the freezer aisle, tossing a bag of frozen vegetables at the visibly shivering child. One man can be heard in the video demanding, “She’s throwing cold food on this child. What’s wrong with you?”
Darby responded defensively to the concerned shoppers, at one point delivering a vulgar rant and briefly twerking for the camera. When law enforcement arrived and spoke with Darby, they discovered that other shoppers had provided clothing for the child, who was still cold and shaking.
Another video posted by Darling showed a shopper dressing the child in clothes from the store, while Darby stood nearby, engrossed in her phone. Following her arrest, Darby was released on bond conditions set by the Hinds County Youth Court. Emergency medical services were called to check on the child, who was later released to a relative approved by Child Protection Services.
After her release, Darby defended her actions on social media, comparing her treatment to that of Jesus and stating that she had not seen her children since the incident. She also claimed that she had not eaten a decent meal since her children were taken away from her. Despite the backlash, Darby maintained that she was a fit parent, citing pictures of meals she had cooked for her children as proof.
