Mother Accused of Instigating Fight Between 7-Year-Olds at School Bus Stop, Assaulting Minor

A shocking incident unfolded at a Memphis school bus stop when a 25-year-old mother, identified as Rniya Criss, allegedly instigated a fight between her 7-year-old son and another boy of the same age. The situation escalated when Criss reportedly assaulted the other boy’s 13-year-old brother, who had stepped in to protect his younger sibling, according to local law enforcement.

On December 1, 2023, two brothers, aged 13 and 7, were waiting for their school bus when Criss arrived at the scene with her son. Police reports suggest that Criss intended for her son to engage in a physical altercation with the younger of the two brothers.

However, the older brother intervened, stating that his younger sibling would not be participating in any fight. Following this, Criss allegedly struck the 13-year-old in the face and kicked him in the neck, causing him to fall to the ground. The boy was left with a bruised eye and a neck injury.

The victim’s father later flagged down a police officer to report the assault that had taken place at the Douglass Middle School bus stop. The family expressed their desire to press charges, and the siblings were able to identify Criss from a police lineup. A warrant for her arrest was issued on December 8.

Criss was taken into custody on Wednesday and booked into the Shelby County Jail. She faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and child abuse and neglect. Despite the severity of the allegations, these charges are considered misdemeanors. Criss was released on a $5,000 bond on Thursday, with a court appearance scheduled for the following day.

The incident has sparked outrage and disbelief among the public, with many expressing their disgust on social media platforms. One user commended the older brother for his bravery in protecting his sibling, while others criticized Criss for her actions, questioning the future prospects of her son given her behavior.
