Mass Stabbing by Woman at Train Station Leaves Several Injured

A violent stabbing incident occurred at a bustling train station in Hamburg, Germany, resulting in several people sustaining injuries, some of which were life-threatening, according to local authorities. A female suspect was apprehended in connection with the attack.

The assailant reportedly targeted individuals on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 at the station around 6 p.m., as per police reports. The station, located in the heart of Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city, serves as a significant junction for local, regional, and long-distance trains.

Initial reports from Hamburg’s fire service indicated that six individuals had sustained life-threatening injuries, while another three were seriously injured, and three others had minor injuries. However, police later stated that there were no definitive numbers yet, but confirmed that several individuals had life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, a 39-year-old German woman, was apprehended at the scene without resistance. After reviewing video footage, police believe she acted alone. The weapon used in the attack, a knife, was secured by the authorities.

At this time, there is no evidence to suggest a political motive behind the attack. Police spokesperson Florian Abbenseth stated that investigators are exploring the possibility that the suspect may have been suffering from mental health issues.

Hours after the incident, a high-speed ICE train remained at the platform with its doors open. However, Abbenseth clarified that the train was not part of the crime scene.

The attack left railway operator Deutsche Bahn “deeply shocked.” Four tracks at the station were closed on Friday evening, causing delays and diversions for some long-distance trains. It’s worth noting that carrying weapons, including knives, is prohibited at the station and on local transport in Hamburg.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his shock at the news, conveying his thoughts to Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher and the victims’ families during a phone call on Friday evening.
