Mass Shooting Kills One, Injures 10 Citywide Shooting Spree

Authorities say the suspect died after a standoff following a shooting rampage across parts of the city.

MIDLAND, Texas — A gunman killed one person and injured 10 others Friday during a shooting rampage in Midland before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, where authorities later found him dead after a lengthy standoff.

Officials said the violence unfolded across several locations in the West Texas city and triggered a large response from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The attack left residents sheltering in place, closed roads across parts of Midland and sent multiple victims to area hospitals. Investigators spent much of the day processing scenes, interviewing witnesses and working to determine what led to the shooting.

Authorities identified the suspect as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, who was already wanted in connection with a separate incident earlier in the week. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Villarreal had been sought on a charge of attempted capital murder of a peace officer after allegedly firing multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday. Officials said Friday’s violence began shortly after 8 a.m. as reports of gunfire emerged in southeast Midland. Witnesses described hearing repeated bursts of gunfire and seeing police vehicles race through the area as the situation escalated. The shootings spread across portions of the city before Villarreal entered an abandoned veterinary clinic and refused to surrender. Law enforcement officers established a perimeter around the building and deployed specialized equipment while residents were urged to avoid the area.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong said emergency crews responded within minutes of the first calls. Firefighters, paramedics and police officers converged on multiple scenes as dispatchers worked to track the suspect’s movements. Officials reported that 11 victims were identified, including one person who died. Several others were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for treatment. Hospital officials implemented security measures as patients arrived and law enforcement secured nearby areas. By later in the day, some victims had been discharged while others remained hospitalized. Authorities have not released detailed information about all of the injured individuals, and investigators have not publicly discussed whether any victims were specifically targeted. Officials also have not announced a motive. Police said no officers were believed to have suffered gunshot injuries during the response despite multiple exchanges of gunfire.

The shooting stunned Midland, a city of roughly 140,000 residents in Texas’ oil-producing Permian Basin region. Community members gathered throughout the day seeking information about loved ones and checking on neighbors. The incident revived memories of previous mass-casualty shootings that have shaken Texas communities over the years. Midland itself remains associated with a 2019 shooting rampage in neighboring communities that left several people dead and many others injured. Local leaders said Friday’s violence again tested emergency response systems and highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement when confronting a mobile suspect moving across multiple locations. Residents described an atmosphere of confusion as alerts spread through social media, workplaces temporarily halted operations and schools monitored developments while police worked to contain the threat.

After several hours, officers used armored vehicles, drones and other specialized resources to assess conditions around the veterinary clinic where the suspect had taken refuge. Authorities said the standoff ended when law enforcement teams determined Villarreal was dead inside the building. Investigators have not publicly stated how he died. The Texas Department of Public Safety and other agencies continued examining evidence at numerous crime scenes into the evening. Officials said road closures would remain in place while investigators documented evidence and reconstructed the timeline of events. Medical examiners were also expected to conduct examinations related to both the suspect and the fatal victim. Law enforcement leaders said additional information about the victims, the sequence of events and any potential motive would be released as the investigation progresses. Further briefings are expected in the coming days.

Residents gathered Friday evening at community events and informal vigils to mourn the victim who was killed and support those recovering from injuries. Witnesses recounted hearing dozens of shots and watching emergency vehicles flood normally quiet streets. Some business owners locked their doors while employees sheltered inside until authorities declared areas secure. City workers assisted with traffic control and logistical support as the response stretched for hours. Community leaders praised first responders for rapidly coordinating across agencies during a fast-moving emergency. Family members of victims awaited updates from hospitals while neighbors shared messages of support. The emotional impact of the attack was visible across the city as residents searched for answers about why the violence occurred and how a wanted suspect was able to carry out the deadly rampage.

The investigation remains active, with authorities still working to establish a motive and complete victim notifications. Officials are expected to release additional findings after evidence reviews and witness interviews are completed in the days ahead.
