Authorities say the suspect died after a standoff following a shooting rampage across parts of the city.
MIDLAND, Texas — A gunman killed one person and injured 10 others Friday during a shooting rampage in Midland before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic, where authorities later found him dead after a lengthy standoff.
Officials said the violence unfolded across several locations in the West Texas city and triggered a large response from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The attack left residents sheltering in place, closed roads across parts of Midland and sent multiple victims to area hospitals. Authorities identified the suspect as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, who was already wanted in connection with a separate incident earlier in the week. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Villarreal had been sought on a charge of attempted capital murder of a peace officer after allegedly firing multiple shots at a Midland police officer during a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday.
