BUCHAREST, Romania — Romanian influencer Mădălina Apostol was laid to rest Thursday in Bucharest, four days after news of her death at age 40 shocked followers and friends who had recently seen her mark her birthday with a public message about choosing life.
Apostol died during the early hours of Sept. 13, according to Romanian media reports and her longtime partner, businessman Nick Rădoi. Rădoi has said Apostol died by suicide and had been struggling with serious physical and mental health problems. Romanian reports, however, initially said authorities had not publicly announced an official cause of death, leaving some details surrounding her death unconfirmed.
Family members, friends and others close to Apostol gathered Thursday at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helena in Bucharest for her funeral service. She was then taken to the Eternitatea private cemetery in the Romanian capital for burial. Rădoi returned to Romania for the services after confirming her death over the weekend. Apostol was the mother of three children, two sons and a 10-year-old daughter.
The death came a little more than a month after Apostol celebrated her 40th birthday on Aug. 1. In a social media post marking the milestone, she referenced the famous “To be or not to be” line from William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” before writing that she had found her own answer and was choosing to live. The message drew new attention after her death because of what Rădoi later disclosed about the difficulties she had been facing.
Apostol had built an online following by sharing photographs and updates from a life that included time in Romania, Mexico and the United States. Her social media presence often showed travel, family and polished lifestyle images. In the months before her death, however, Romanian reports said she became less public about her personal life and posted less frequently than she had in the past.
Rădoi said after her death that Apostol had struggled with depression and had received psychiatric treatment in Romania. He also described serious physical health problems. Apostol had previously spoken publicly about having vasculitis, an autoimmune condition involving inflammation of blood vessels. Her medical history does not by itself establish the circumstances of her death, and no official medical finding reviewed for this report has linked a specific condition to her death.
Several reports have described earlier mental health crises based largely on statements from Rădoi and people identified as being close to Apostol. Those accounts have not all been independently confirmed. Rădoi said she had received support and treatment before her death and asked that the public approach the family’s loss with compassion, particularly because Apostol left behind children.
Her final social media activity also received attention after her death. Reports said that shortly before she died, Apostol shared older photographs of her sons from years earlier. The posts did not publicly announce an intention to harm herself, and it would not be possible to determine a person’s mental state from social media activity alone. Earlier Romanian coverage had noted that she had become more private during the months before her death.
News of Apostol’s death first spread through Romanian entertainment media after Rădoi confirmed it Sept. 13. Some early reports differed about her age, with several describing her as 41. More recent reporting, including coverage of her Aug. 1 birthday, identified her as 40. Reports also differed in how firmly they described the cause of death, with Rădoi saying she died by suicide while other outlets noted that an official cause had not yet been made public.
Thursday’s funeral brought family and friends together in Bucharest as they said goodbye to Apostol. Her burial marked the latest confirmed development following several days of public attention surrounding her death. As of Thursday, the reviewed reports did not identify a publicly released official medical or investigative finding establishing the precise circumstances of her death beyond the account provided by Rădoi.
