GREENSBORO, N.C. — A 15-year-old Page High School football player died days after suffering an injury during a junior varsity game against crosstown rival Grimsley High School, leaving his family, teammates and school community mourning as questions remain about exactly what happened on the field.
Davion Fewell was injured during the Sept. 10 game at Page High School and received immediate medical attention before being taken to a hospital, according to Guilford County Schools and local reports. His family said he died Sunday, Sept. 13. Officials have not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the injury or released an official medical cause of death. A candlelight vigil honoring Fewell is scheduled for Thursday evening at the school’s football stadium.
The injury occurred only minutes into the junior varsity game, according to local reporting. Guilford County Emergency Services said an ambulance was dispatched to Page High School shortly after 7:15 p.m. Responders treated and transported one patient. The school district said trained personnel were already providing medical care before Fewell was taken to the hospital.
Fewell’s family and the Page football program later publicly identified him. The school district has limited the medical information it has released, citing the family’s privacy. Fewell’s relatives said he died from injuries suffered during the game, but authorities have not provided a detailed account of the play in which he was hurt or a medical finding explaining his death.
Page High School Principal Erik Naglee informed families of the student’s death Sunday night. Northwest Guilford Middle School student Caden Sorrell died in late August after suffering sudden cardiac arrest during practice, according to his family and local reporting. Support for Fewell’s family has also come from former Grimsley High School football player D.J. Reader, now a defensive tackle for the New York Giants. The A Son Never Forgets Foundation, an organization founded by Reader, is covering Fewell’s funeral expenses, according to the school district and local reports.
Page’s football program scheduled a candlelight vigil for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the school’s stadium on Alma Pinnix Drive. The gathering is intended to give Fewell’s family, classmates, teammates and the wider Greensboro community an opportunity to remember him. As of Thursday, officials had not publicly released his precise injury or an official medical cause of death.
