A tragic accident took place on the westbound lanes of the Katy Freeway near Blalock, Texas on Friday evening. A detached tire from an eastbound 18-wheeler flew off and struck a KIA SUV. The impact of the tire hitting the SUV instantly killed the passenger in the car. The driver was injured but not fatally.
The KIA SUV was propelled off the freeway, crossing all six lanes, until it eventually crashed into a side wall. Thankfully, the driver was not killed but was taken to the hospital for treatment for their non-life-threatening injuries.
It is presumed that the loose tire that caused the accident was a spare from the 18-wheeler. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not present at the scene and had driven off, possibly not aware of the incident. As of Friday, the authorities were still looking for the driver of the 18-wheeler.
The authorities blocked off the westbound lanes of the Katy Freeway for an hour while they investigated and cleared the wreckage.
