Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during a recent visit to a World War II battlefield in Luxembourg, as confirmed by her office on Friday. Pelosi, 84, was part of a bipartisan delegation of lawmakers visiting the Western European country to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Following the injury, Pelosi was admitted to a local hospital for further evaluation, according to her spokesperson, Ian Krager.
Krager assured that Pelosi is receiving top-notch medical care. Despite her injury, Pelosi continues to fulfill her duties and expressed disappointment for not being able to participate in the remaining events of the delegation. These events were designed to honor the courage of American soldiers during one of the most significant acts of bravery in the country’s history.
Pelosi’s press representative also expressed her appreciation to the veterans and the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service during World War II and their contribution to peace in Europe. The specifics of Pelosi’s injury have not been disclosed.
The news of Pelosi’s injury came to light shortly after reports of her behind-the-scenes efforts to oppose Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s bid to serve as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. Pelosi is reportedly backing Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), 74, over the 35-year-old New York City politician.
Pelosi’s mishap occurred just days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, another politician in his eighties, suffered a fall in the US Capitol, resulting in a scraped face and sprained wrist. McConnell, 82, holds the record for being the longest-serving leader of either party in the Senate in US history.
The incident has sparked renewed conversations about the age of politicians and their capacity to serve in office. Presently, six senators and 16 members of the House are in their 80s, with 31 senators and 76 House members in their 70s. The oldest US politician is Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who is 90 years old.
Krager did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
