Two local fishermen experienced an unexpected twist during a routine fishing trip off the coast of Brevard County. Instead of reeling in their usual catch of Mahi-Mahi, they discovered a floating package that turned out to be a bale of cocaine. The illicit substance, valued at an estimated $1.7 million, was neatly packaged and bore a distinctive scorpion logo.
Initially, the fishermen mistook the package for a log. However, upon closer examination, they realized it was 25 kilos of cocaine. The discovery was alarming, prompting them to immediately contact the U.S. Coast Guard to report their unusual find.
The fishermen, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed their relief when law enforcement authorities took possession of the bale. One of them admitted, “We were definitely uneasy having it on board. It was a relief to hand it over to the professionals.”
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Coast Guard responded promptly, meeting the fishermen at a local boat ramp to secure the narcotics. Sheriff Wayne Ivey noted the packages were well-sealed and branded, indicating a sophisticated level of distribution. He humorously suggested that the original owners could claim their property by contacting the narcotics division.
The unexpected discovery has piqued the interest of federal agencies. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is expected to collaborate with them on the investigation. The fishermen, who have been fishing in these waters for seven years, described the incident as unprecedented, marking it as a day they will not soon forget.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to trace the origins of the cocaine and its intended destination. Meanwhile, the fishermen continue their sea adventures, now with a remarkable story to add to their fishing tales.
