6th-grade teacher killed in apparent murder-suicide

A 26-year-old middle school teacher and recent mother in southern Florida was killed in her home over the weekend where her 10-month-old baby was found unharmed but crying. Amanda Hicks, a sixth-grade reading teacher at Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School in Port St. Lucie’s Martin County, was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend. However, authorities have not disclosed his identity.

When officers arrived at the home, located in the 5500 block of NW East Torino Parkway, they heard the infant crying and saw two adults motionless on the floor. After forcing their way into the residence, the officers confirmed that the two people were dead. The child was taken to a family member.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department concluded that Hicks was killed by her partner before he took his own life. No motive has been provided.

In a letter to parents and staff, school principal Darcia Borel said Hicks’ death was tragic and that grief counselors would be available when students return to school on May 30.

The cause of death has not been revealed. The police department has not yet responded to a message from Law&Crime for more details.
