LAS VEGAS — Comedian Carrot Top was recovering in a Las Vegas hospital Saturday after being hospitalized Friday, his representative confirmed, while TMZ reported that the longtime Strip performer had attempted suicide before his scheduled evening show.
The circumstances surrounding the hospitalization have not been independently confirmed. TMZ, citing unidentified sources familiar with the situation, reported that Carrot Top, whose real name is Scott Thompson, was taken to a local hospital after a suicide attempt in the Las Vegas area. His publicist, Jami Schlicher, separately confirmed his hospitalization but did not confirm the reported cause or provide details about what happened.
“Mr. Thompson is recovering in the hospital and is receiving the care and support he needs,” Schlicher told TheWrap on Friday evening. She said Thompson’s family and those closest to him appreciated the public concern and asked that their privacy be respected. No further details about his condition had been publicly released as of Saturday morning.
Thompson, 61, had been scheduled to perform an 8 p.m. show Friday at the Atrium Showroom at the Luxor Hotel and Casino. Ticketmaster listed the Sept. 18 performance as canceled. His scheduled Saturday performance was also listed as canceled as of Sept. 19. MGM Resorts referred questions about Thompson’s condition to his representative, according to Casino.org.
The Luxor’s official entertainment page normally lists Carrot Top performances at 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Current MGM entertainment listings showed his next performance on the calendar for Monday, Sept. 21, but neither the resort nor Thompson’s representative had publicly confirmed when he would return to the stage. His immediate performance schedule therefore remained subject to change while he received medical care.
Thompson has been a fixture at the Luxor for more than two decades. The resort says he has headlined his prop-comedy show there since 2005, combining jokes about current events and pop culture with elaborate homemade props and physical comedy. His distinctive red hair and prop-heavy routines have made Carrot Top one of the most recognizable comedy performers on the Las Vegas Strip.
His national career began before the Las Vegas residency. TheWrap reported that Thompson gained wider attention in 1991 through appearances on “Comic Strip Live” and “Star Search.” He later appeared in television programs including “Scrubs,” “George Lopez,” “Reno 911!” and “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” along with comedy specials and other entertainment projects.
Reports published after his hospitalization have not established why the incident occurred, and Thompson’s representative has not publicly discussed his mental state, a possible motive or other circumstances surrounding the reported suicide attempt. No additional details about his treatment have been released. Those questions remain unanswered as his family has requested privacy.
As of Sept. 19, Schlicher’s statement that Thompson was recovering and receiving care remained the most detailed on-the-record update from his team. His return to the Luxor had not been confirmed, while the Friday and Saturday performances were listed as canceled.
