South Carolina officials report that a toddler fatally shot his own mother on Wednesday.
Shortly before 8 a.m., the 3-year-old grabbed the unsecured gun in their Spartanburg home and shot her, a sheriff’s official wrote on Facebook.
It was two hours later that the 33-year-old mother died at a local hospital.
A grandmother who witnessed the murder told police the toddler killed her daughter after “gaining access to an unsecured firearm,” police said.
While an investigation remains active, the Spartanburg Sheriff’s Office said her account “corroborated with both the evidence at the scene and the victim’s injuries.”
Further information has not been released by officials. On Thursday, a forensic autopsy will be performed.
