A tragic incident unfolded in Houston, Texas, on Saturday night when an 11-year-old boy was fatally shot during a prank game known as “ding dong ditch.” The boy, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was playing the doorbell prank with a group of friends around 11 p.m. on Racine Street when he was shot multiple times after ringing a doorbell and fleeing, according to a statement from the Houston Police Department.
The boy was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, having sustained several gunshot wounds. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the boy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Sunday, as per the police update.
Following the shooting, the police detained one individual for questioning. However, the person was later released, the police confirmed. As part of the ongoing investigation, the Houston police are executing a search warrant.
The “ding dong ditch” prank, which involves ringing a doorbell and running away to confuse homeowners, has gained popularity on social media platforms like TikTok. Unfortunately, this is not the first time the prank has led to a tragic outcome. In recent years, similar incidents have occurred across the country.
In May, a high school athlete in Virginia was allegedly shot and killed by a homeowner after the teenager and his friends played “ding dong ditch.” In July 2024, a teenager in Maine was shot and injured after a group of friends pulled the same prank on a homeowner who was armed.
The investigation into the Texas incident is still ongoing, and further details are expected to be released once the identity of the 11-year-old boy is verified.
