A tragic incident unfolded at an Arizona high school when a student was fatally stabbed during an argument with another teenager. The incident occurred just two weeks into the new school year at Maryvale High School in Phoenix, causing widespread panic among students and parents. The Phoenix police were alerted to the situation by the school’s safety officer around 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, the police discovered one student with multiple stab wounds and another with non-life-threatening injuries. The critically injured student was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The other student involved in the incident was arrested and hospitalized for his injuries. The nature of his injuries was not specified by the police.
As the authorities dealt with the grim situation, the school was placed under lockdown. Students inside the school were terrified and began reaching out to their parents. Despite school officials urging parents not to come to the school, many were waiting anxiously outside the school premises when the lockdown was lifted.
One parent, Veronica Lizarrega, shared her distress with Fox 10 Phoenix. She received a text from her son informing her about the lockdown at the school. She said, “Even having to send that text message. I mean, it’s something you thought you’d never have to do.”
In the aftermath of the incident, the school announced that it would operate on a modified schedule and provide counselors for students and staff. The school had only recently started its academic year on August 4.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Horne, expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, “The death of a student as the result of a stabbing at Maryvale High School is a terrible tragedy. Schools must be safe places.” He praised the school safety officer for his immediate response and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring school safety.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
