An argument over common courtesy tragically escalated into a fatal shooting outside a PetSmart in Dallas. Cecilia Simpson, 41, was killed, and police have charged Keona Zachyua Hampton, 22, with murder in connection with the incident.
The confrontation began outside a Five Below store when Simpson reportedly held a door open for Hampton, who did not respond with a thank you. This minor interaction led to a verbal altercation between the two women, according to police reports.
The encounter continued when Simpson and her daughter drove to a nearby shopping plaza that included a PetSmart. Simpson told employees that Hampton was following them. A subsequent argument occurred inside PetSmart, prompting employees to ask the involved parties to leave the premises.
According to a witness, an ER nurse, Hampton urged Simpson to take their disagreement outside, leading to a heated exchange in the parking lot. Hampton allegedly threw a drink bottle at Simpson’s vehicle as tensions flared. As Simpson and her daughter attempted to defuse the situation by getting into their car, a physical struggle ensued.
Simpson’s daughter reported that her mother hit Hampton several times, urging her to leave. The situation reached its tragic conclusion around 1 p.m. when shots were fired in the parking lot. Simpson was transported to Methodist Central Hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities apprehended Hampton hours later. During police questioning, Hampton admitted to the verbal conflict, claiming she was trying to distance herself from Simpson, according to the affidavit.
Currently held in the Dallas County Jail, Hampton awaits further legal proceedings, as jail records do not show a bond set at this time. The Dallas Police Department’s investigation continues, and they urge anyone with additional information to contact Detective T. Gross via email or phone.
