Deputies say the 75-year-old continued attacking his wife after she took the knife away and later denied involvement.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 75-year-old man is being held after authorities accused him of stabbing his wife while she slept in their North Miami-Dade home, then punching her as she tried to escape and call 911, according to an arrest report.
Pratapsinh K. Thakor was arrested Sept. 1 and faces one count of attempted felony murder causing injury and one count of domestic battery causing harm, according to jail and court records cited by local news organizations. Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the attack happened at about 1 a.m. The woman survived and was taken to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive.
According to the arrest report, Thakor entered the bedroom he shared with his wife and began attacking her while she was asleep. Investigators said she woke during the assault and pleaded with him to stop. The woman was eventually able to take the knife away from him, but deputies allege the attack continued after Thakor was disarmed.
Investigators said Thakor then punched his wife with a closed fist. The woman managed to get away long enough to call 911 and report the domestic violence incident. When deputies arrived at the apartment, they found her outside and said Thakor was holding her by the hair. He was taken into custody at the scene.
The woman was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. Authorities said medical personnel documented two wounds on the left side of her back, an injury to her left arm, a punctured lung and an injury to her mouth. The arrest report also said investigators recovered a cutting instrument from the scene. The woman’s name has not been publicly released in the reports reviewed.
Authorities said Thakor made an unsolicited statement after his arrest in which he denied involvement in the stabbing. Investigators have not publicly described what led to the alleged attack or announced a suspected motive. The criminal allegations against Thakor remain accusations, and the case has not been resolved in court.
Publicly released versions of the arrest report did not identify the precise address of the couple’s residence. Other reporting, citing property records, placed a condominium associated with Thakor and relatives in the 1400 block of Northeast Miami Gardens Drive, near North Miami Beach. Law enforcement described the incident as occurring at the home Thakor shared with his wife.
Thakor was taken after his arrest to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Intracoastal District Station and later booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He appeared before a judge Wednesday, Sept. 2, for an initial bond proceeding. Reports from the hearing said he was ordered held without bond on the attempted felony murder charge.
The available reports did not identify an attorney representing Thakor or provide a confirmed date for his next court appearance. No further public update on the woman’s condition beyond the injuries documented after the attack was identified in the reporting reviewed through Friday.
