Police said three people approached the victims in a silver Nissan before opening fire and fleeing east.
CHICAGO, Ill. — A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were fatally shot Monday evening as they left a gas station on Chicago’s South Side, police said, and detectives were continuing to investigate without announcing an arrest.
The shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 in the 200 block of West Pershing Road in the Fuller Park area. Chicago police said the man and woman were leaving a Mobil gas station when three people in a silver Nissan sedan approached them. The occupants produced firearms and opened fire before the car fled east, according to police accounts reported by several Chicago news organizations.
The man was struck multiple times and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Police said he later died from his injuries. The woman also suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to the same hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities had not publicly released the victims’ identities in the initial police accounts reviewed for this report. Police also had not disclosed a possible motive or explained whether investigators believe the two victims were specifically targeted. No other injuries were reported in connection with the shooting.
Police described three people as being involved but released little additional information about them. Investigators said the group was traveling in a silver Nissan sedan, which left the scene eastbound after the gunfire. Authorities had not publicly announced that the vehicle had been recovered.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting also remained unclear. Police did not say whether the victims had interacted with the people in the Nissan before the shooting or how long they had been at the gas station. No documented witness statements or surveillance findings had been publicly released in the initial reports.
Area One detectives are handling the homicide investigation. As of the latest reliable reports reviewed, police had not announced any arrests or criminal charges connected with the deaths. The department also had not released additional identifying information about the people investigators were seeking.
The investigation remained active Wednesday, with several central questions unresolved, including the identities of those responsible and what led to the attack. Police had not announced a motive, arrest or other major break in the case.
