Toddler dies after being left home alone for 10 days while she went on vacation

Kristel A. Candelario, a 31-year-old mother from Ohio, was arrested on Saturday and charged with murder for the death of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn Candelario.

According to court documents, the Cleveland Police Department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a call about an unresponsive baby on June 16 at a residence in the 3100 block of West 97th Street. When they arrived, the child had already passed away.

The police reported that there were no signs of trauma, however, in Jailyn’s Pack-N-Play bin, there was evidence of extreme dehydration with soiled blankets and a bottom liner saturated with urine and feces.

Candelario admitted to leaving her toddler unattended for over a week while she went on a vacation to Puerto Rico and Detroit, Michigan. After the autopsy, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner concluded that the child had been left alone for about 10 days which led to her death.

Additionally, Candelario’s neighbors reported that she would leave her daughter with them for weekends and then disappear for weeks at a time. They expressed that they wished she had left the child with them instead of leaving her alone.
