A 16-year-old North Carolina boy, Jeremiah Gonzalez, is not expected to survive after being shot during a sleepover, according to a statement from his family on a GoFundMe page. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, with the alleged shooter identified as 20-year-old Yosue Ramos.
Law enforcement documents reveal that Ramos reportedly brought two firearms to the residence where the sleepover was taking place. The hosts were two brothers, one aged 21 and the other a teenager, who were friends with both Ramos and Gonzalez.
The affidavit details that the older brother was engaged in a video game while Gonzalez and the younger brother were on a nearby bed. The younger brother informed the police that Ramos retrieved one of his guns from a dresser, aimed it at Gonzalez, and fired.
Gonzalez sustained gunshot wounds to his right temple and upper arm. He was rushed to Carolina Medical Center with injuries deemed life-threatening. A GoFundMe campaign initiated for his family revealed that medical professionals have informed the family that Gonzalez is unlikely to pull through.
Ramos reportedly fled the scene as the younger brother dialed 911 to report the shooting. The older brother attempted to provide first aid to Gonzalez. During his interview with the police, the younger brother claimed that Ramos often brandished unloaded firearms at them and pulled the trigger.
The weapon used in the shooting, a Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun, was left at the scene by Ramos. Upon examination, the police determined that the firearm had been stolen. Ramos was later apprehended after police traced the SUV he used to flee the scene.
Ramos is currently facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a stolen weapon. He is being held at the county jail on a $100,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 7.
