Investigators say a Washington state teenager was robbed and fatally shot after being called to a vehicle by strangers.
PARKLAND, Wash. β A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed while walking with his girlfriend in Pierce County after strangers allegedly called him over to their vehicle, robbed him of jewelry and opened fire, authorities said. Family members say the teen spent his final moments trying to protect his girlfriend from danger.
The killing has shaken the Parkland community as investigators search for those responsible and work to determine why the teenager was targeted. The victim, identified by relatives as Braylon, was walking with his girlfriend Sunday night when a vehicle approached them. Detectives believe the encounter quickly turned into a robbery before ending in gunfire. No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday, and authorities described the investigation as active and ongoing.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Sunday night to reports of a shooting on Sheridan Avenue in Parkland. When first responders arrived, they found the teenager lying in the roadway with critical injuries. Deputies immediately began lifesaving efforts before medical personnel arrived, but the teen was pronounced dead. Investigators said Braylon had been walking with his girlfriend when occupants of a vehicle called him over. Authorities believe the suspects robbed him of jewelry and then shot him before fleeing the area. Detectives have not publicly identified how many people were inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
As investigators searched for answers, family members and loved ones began sharing details about Braylon’s final actions. His girlfriend, Katelyn Zuniga, said he protected her during the encounter. βHe protected me his last few seconds,β she said, describing him as someone who consistently looked after the people around him. Braylon’s stepmother, Chelsea Diaz, said she believed the teenager approached the vehicle because he was trying to ensure his girlfriend’s safety.
Authorities have not released details about whether the suspects specifically targeted Braylon or selected him at random. Detectives also have not disclosed whether the robbers demanded additional property beyond the jewelry reportedly taken during the encounter. Those unanswered questions remain central to the investigation as law enforcement officials continue to piece together the sequence of events.
The shooting occurred in a part of Pierce County where investigators routinely rely on witness statements, surveillance footage and forensic evidence to reconstruct violent crimes. The death of a teenager under such circumstances has drawn widespread attention throughout the region, particularly because family members described Braylon as a protective and caring young man. Community members expressed grief after news of the killing spread.
Detectives said the investigation remains active as they pursue leads and analyze evidence collected during the initial response. Officials have not announced arrests, filed charges or identified suspects. Investigators have also not publicly released descriptions of everyone believed to be involved. Authorities said a red sedan believed to be connected to the case has been located and is being examined as part of the investigation.
For those who knew Braylon, the focus remains on remembering a teenager whose final moments reflected the qualities they say defined his life. Friends and relatives described him as loyal, protective and deeply committed to the people he loved. Their memories have become a central part of the public response to the case as investigators continue searching for answers.
The investigation remains open, and authorities have not announced when additional information may be released. Detectives continue examining evidence and pursuing leads as the search for suspects moves forward. The next major developments are expected to come through potential arrests or further updates from investigators.
