Teen Dies in Tragic Incident at Beach

A 17-year-old boy tragically lost his life on an Italian beach after a sand tunnel he was constructing collapsed, burying him alive. The teenager, named Riccardo Boni, was vacationing with his family at Montalto di Castro Beach in Lazio when the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Boni had been digging a five-foot tunnel in a secluded part of the beach when the structure gave way, trapping him beneath the sand.

Boni’s father, who had been resting nearby, woke to find his eldest son missing. The father’s frantic search led him to the collapsed tunnel, where he found his son’s T-shirt and flip-flops. Despite the desperate efforts of the father, other beachgoers, and lifeguards to dig the boy out, it was too late.

According to Carabinieri police Lieutenant Daniel Tramontana, the beach was crowded, but no one was aware of the unfolding tragedy. “They lost a lot of time because they couldn’t see him. When they realized he was missing they began to look for him but it was too late,” Tramontana said.

When Boni was finally pulled from the sand, he was unresponsive. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, they were unable to revive him. A witness at the scene described the weight of the sand, explaining that it doesn’t allow even a small amount of oxygen to pass through and is prone to further collapse, making extraction extremely difficult.

In the wake of the tragic incident, authorities have initiated an investigation into Boni’s death. They will determine whether an autopsy is necessary to confirm the cause of death. The incident has left the family and the community in shock. “We deal with terrible situations all the time but we can’t imagine how a game on the beach ended up this way,” Tramontana said. “The family is destroyed, they are in deep shock.”
