A tragic skydiving accident in Ogle County, Illinois, resulted in one fatality and another person injured on Wednesday. The incident occurred when two skydivers collided midair, causing their parachutes to collapse and sending them plummeting towards the ground.
The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call around 7 p.m. regarding a skydiving mishap involving an “uncontrolled descent” in Rochelle, Illinois. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 40-year-old man in a nearby parking lot with severe injuries.
The unidentified man was rushed to Rochelle Community Hospital by firefighters, where he was later pronounced dead. The second skydiver involved in the accident was located at Koritz Field–Rochelle Municipal Airport and transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The extent of the second skydiver’s injuries remains uncertain.
Preliminary investigations by officials suggest that the two skydivers collided midair, leading to the collapse of both their parachutes. Although reserve parachutes were deployed, the collision resulted in the “uncontrolled descent” of one of the skydivers.
The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with federal authorities, continues to investigate the incident.
This skydiving accident occurred less than two weeks after a small skydiving airplane carrying 15 people crashed at a New Jersey airport. The Cessna 208B was taking off from Cross Keys Airport in Monroe Township on July 2 when it slid off the end of the runway. Five people were injured and taken to the hospital, but there were no fatalities. The cause of the plane crash is still under investigation.
