Teen Brothers Charged in Tragic Murder of 14-Year-Old

Two adolescent brothers, aged 14 and 16, stood before a judge in a juvenile court today, facing charges related to the tragic killing of 14-year-old Simon Cuevas. Cuevas was fatally attacked while returning home from school in April. The brothers, who voluntarily surrendered to the authorities, were presented separately before Judge Jackie Valdez.

The elder of the two brothers, who turned himself in on August 14 after an arrest warrant was issued, was the first to face the court. The court was informed of the alleged ambush, assault, and fatal shooting of Simon Cuevas near Brewer Academy. In connection with the case, 18-year-old Fernando Flores has been apprehended, while another suspect, 20-year-old Cesar Tijarina, ended his life before he could be arrested.

The defense argued for the release of the older brother under electronic surveillance, citing the principle of fairness. However, the prosecution objected to this request, emphasizing the severity of the alleged crime. Judge Valdez agreed with the prosecution, ruling that the teenager should remain in custody.

During the younger brother’s hearing, his mother raised concerns about ongoing threats and attacks against him while in detention. Despite these fears, the young boy expressed a wish to return home and for life to return to normal. However, the judge ordered his continued detention.

Both brothers are due to return to the juvenile justice center for another hearing in 10 days. At this hearing, their future legal status will be further evaluated.

The case has drawn significant public interest, not only because of the young ages of those involved but also due to the violent nature of the crime and its impact on the community.
