An 18-year-old man, Lawan Jones, has been accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend’s father following a dispute over social media posts deemed “inappropriate”. The incident took place in Broward County, Florida, where Jones allegedly fled the scene with his girlfriend. However, he later turned himself in to the authorities, and his girlfriend was found unharmed.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies, along with the Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, responded to a shooting call on Monday around 4:44 p.m. The call led them to the 1500 block of Northeast 28th Street, where they discovered the victim, 44-year-old Keith Bryan Poole, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency crews on the scene found Poole in critical condition. He was immediately transported to Broward Health North, where he was later pronounced dead. The authorities have not yet disclosed the specifics of the social media posts that allegedly sparked the fatal argument.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the shooting occurred after Poole confronted Jones about certain social media posts he found inappropriate. The confrontation escalated, leading to Jones allegedly shooting Poole. Prior to identifying Jones as the suspect, deputies reported that Poole was shot outside his residence by an individual known to him.
Following the shooting, Jones reportedly fled the scene with his girlfriend. A search was initiated by the deputies, but Jones eventually surrendered himself to the authorities on Wednesday. He is currently being held at the Broward County jail without bond, facing a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release the probable cause affidavit. Court records have not indicated any defense lawyer or upcoming hearings for Jones.
