Teacher Dies After Freak Accident at School

The education community in Melbourne is mourning the loss of a respected former principal, Paul Hogan, who tragically died in an accident at St. Margaret’s Primary School in Spotswood. The 61-year-old was retrieving balls from the school’s roof when he fell approximately 10 feet, sustaining severe head injuries. Despite immediate medical attention and hospitalization, Hogan succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Hogan, who had been serving as a temporary teacher at the school at the time of the accident, was remembered fondly by those who knew him. His dedication to education and his ability to infuse joy and laughter into his interactions made him a beloved figure among students and staff alike.

The school community expressed their grief and condolences in a letter sent to families, highlighting Hogan’s significant contributions to education. Hogan had a distinguished career, serving as the principal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Sunbury starting in 2009, and later at St. Mary’s Primary School in Ascot Vale until his retirement in 2022. Despite retiring, Hogan remained active in the education sector, working part-time and as a substitute teacher.

Dr. Edward Simons, the executive director of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), voiced the community’s profound sorrow over Hogan’s unexpected passing. He lauded Hogan as a highly esteemed educator and leader, extending sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues. In response to the tragedy, MACS has initiated specialist support services to aid those affected.

Michael Di Nuzzo, the Principal of St. Therese’s Primary School, also paid tribute to Hogan, acknowledging the positive influence he had on countless individuals throughout his years of service in MACS schools.

Hogan’s untimely death has deeply affected both the school community and the broader education sector, leaving a void in the hearts of many. The tragic circumstances surrounding his death serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures in the workplace.
