ATHENS, Ga. — A 21-year-old University of Georgia student survived a fall from an eighth-floor apartment window Saturday after witnesses told police she had been dancing on a couch or air mattress near the open window before falling through its screen.
Kristen Elizabeth Sargent was seriously injured in the fall at Rambler Athens, an off-campus apartment complex on West Broad Street near the university. Athens-Clarke County police said Sargent was conscious and alert after the fall, and the initial investigation indicated the incident was accidental. Later reports from her family said she was awake and talking while recovering in intensive care.
Emergency crews were called to the apartment complex Saturday evening. According to an Athens-Clarke County police incident report, witnesses told investigators that Sargent had been dancing on a couch or air mattress positioned near an open eighth-floor window. She apparently went through the window screen and fell into the courtyard and pool area below.
The pool deck is on the building’s second-floor courtyard, meaning Sargent did not fall all the way to ground level. Investigators found evidence suggesting she struck a cushioned metal bench during the fall. The bench had a damaged armrest, according to the police report. Authorities have not determined publicly what effect, if any, striking the bench had on the outcome.
First responders found Sargent near the pool and transported her to a hospital with serious injuries. Her father, Richard Sargent, later told local media that his daughter had suffered multiple broken bones but was awake and communicating. Published reports said she remained in intensive care as she recovered.
Police said the evidence gathered during the initial investigation suggested the fall was an accident. Investigators interviewed witnesses and examined the area around the window and pool deck. Authorities had not reported evidence of criminal activity in connection with the fall.
The accident occurred after Georgia’s football victory over Oklahoma earlier Saturday. Sargent’s father referenced the excitement surrounding the game while speaking with local media but declined to provide a detailed account of the circumstances immediately before his daughter’s fall. Police reports, rather than family statements, provided the account that she had been dancing near the window.
Rambler Athens management said its windows have safety limiters and reminded residents not to tamper with them. The apartment complex said it was cooperating with authorities as they investigated the accident. Publicly available reports did not establish whether a limiter on the specific window involved was engaged, altered or functioning at the time, so the cause of the window opening remained unresolved.
The University of Georgia campus is close to the apartment complex, but Rambler Athens is private, off-campus student housing. The incident therefore involved local police and emergency responders rather than occurring inside a university residence hall.
Sargent remained hospitalized in the latest reliable reporting, with family members describing her as awake and recovering despite serious injuries. Athens-Clarke County police continued reviewing the incident, while their preliminary findings indicated the eight-story fall was accidental.
