Agent Nicholas Graham, 33, died after police confronted a suspected hit-and-run driver aboard a Route 76 bus Thursday evening.
LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood Police Agent Nicholas Graham was killed and three other officers were wounded Thursday when a man suspected in an earlier hit-and-run opened fire as officers followed him onto a Regional Transportation District bus, authorities said. Police returned fire and killed the suspected gunman.
The shooting unfolded Nov. 5 near West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard after officers spent several hours looking for a person connected to a hit-and-run elsewhere in Lakewood. Graham, 33, was one of four Lakewood agents struck by gunfire. Two of the surviving agents had been released from hospitals by Friday, while a third remained hospitalized and was expected to recover, according to the Lakewood Police Department. A bystander also was injured.
Police said the sequence began shortly before 3:45 p.m., when officers responded to a hit-and-run near Kipling Street and West 13th Avenue. Witnesses told investigators that the driver fled the area, but they were able to give officers a description. Several hours later, at about 6:29 p.m., a Lakewood agent recognized a person matching that description in the busy Colfax and Wadsworth area and called for additional officers.
The suspect was boarding an RTD bus when officers moved in, police said. RTD later said the officers initially encountered the man away from the bus before he boarded the Route 76 vehicle and officers followed him. The transit agency said four customers were aboard the contracted bus at the time. Police reported that shots were fired at about 6:32 p.m. and an officer-down call followed about a minute later.
Lakewood police said the man fired multiple rounds at approaching officers. The officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed. Authorities had not publicly identified him through an official release as of Saturday. The circumstances surrounding the bystander’s injury also had not been fully released. RTD said it was cooperating with investigators and reported no continuing service impacts from the incident.
Graham joined the Lakewood Police Department in January 2019 and later worked in its major crimes unit. Police Chief Phillip Smith said Graham began his career in patrol, moved into investigations and became a field training agent in 2023. He handled hundreds of cases while serving with the major crimes team and had received recognition for his investigative work. The department described his death as a devastating loss for his family, colleagues and the Lakewood community.
The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response and an outpouring of support from agencies around the Denver area. Officers gathered outside the hospital where Graham was treated, and a procession later honored him. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said law enforcement officers put their lives at risk to protect their communities and offered condolences to Graham’s family while wishing the wounded officers and civilian a full recovery.
RTD also expressed condolences to Graham’s family, friends and colleagues and said its thoughts were with the wounded officers, the injured customer, the bus operator and others affected by the shooting. The transit agency said the incident involved a contracted bus operating on Route 76 and pledged continued cooperation as investigators reconstruct what happened before and during the exchange of gunfire.
The shooting left Lakewood police managing both an investigation and the sudden loss of one of its officers. Neighboring law enforcement agencies offered assistance with patrol duties and other calls while members of the department mourned and supported Graham’s family and the three injured agents. Lakewood officials said the surviving officers were recovering, although one remained hospitalized Friday.
The Lakewood Police Department is investigating the events tied to the suspect before the bus shooting, while the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office is overseeing the Critical Incident Response Team investigation into the officers’ use of force. Authorities had not announced final findings or released the names of the wounded officers or injured bystander as of Saturday.
