In an unprecedented case in Georgia, law enforcement agencies have been tirelessly searching for the fiancé of a deceased Spelman College instructor. The woman’s body was discovered floating in a lake, along with an empty boat and a pair of shoes believed to belong to her partner. The U.S. Secret Service has been enlisted to aid in the investigation, according to official sources.
The search for Gary Jones, the fiancé of the late Joycelyn Wilson, has been ongoing for nearly a month. The couple was last seen alive together at Lake Oconee, which has become the focal point of the largest search operation in Putnam County’s history. Jones is presumed dead, having vanished on February 8, the same day Wilson was last seen alive.
The couple’s boat was discovered circling a section of Lake Oconee, approximately seven miles from the boat launch where they were recorded on video earlier that day. According to law enforcement, the couple can be seen launching the boat together in the footage. Based on witness accounts and phone records, authorities believe the incident occurred between 5:01 p.m. and 5:24 p.m.
Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills described the search area as vast and challenging due to the cold weather and water conditions. Despite these obstacles, a significant effort is being made to locate Jones’ body.
Authorities have yet to determine why Wilson’s body surfaced while Jones’ remains missing. Preliminary findings suggest that Wilson’s lungs contained a mixture of air and water at the time of her death.
Investigators have found Wilson’s phone, which was still in her hand when her body was discovered. They believe she took several photos before her death, but have been unable to access the device due to a security lock. This is where the Secret Service’s expertise has been called upon.
Despite their efforts, agents have been unable to unlock the phone, which last recorded a photo at 4:59 p.m. on the day of the incident. The Georgia Department of Corrections has been enlisted to assist, as they reportedly possess a device that may be able to bypass the phone’s security code.
Sheriff Sills has acknowledged rumors and theories surrounding the couple’s relationship and their plans to marry. However, he has refrained from commenting further, stating that the focus remains on the death investigation.
The search for Jones has been concentrated on a 200-acre triangular area of Lake Oconee, involving the use of search dogs and divers. The water search has been temporarily suspended, but daily shoreline searches continue.
