Pregnant Mother Found Dead in Garage

Court records allege Noelle Clark was attacked inside the family’s Vail home before deputies found her dead in the garage.

VAIL, Ariz. — An Arizona man faces two counts of second-degree murder after authorities accused him of killing his pregnant wife inside their Vail home, where the couple’s two young children were found unharmed.

Joseph Clark, 49, was arrested after Pima County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported domestic disturbance on Oct. 9 and found his wife, 39-year-old Noelle Clark, dead in the garage. Authorities said Noelle Clark was pregnant, and later court records described injuries and evidence that investigators allege resulted from an attack inside the home. The two murder counts have been reported as relating to the deaths of Noelle Clark and her unborn child.

Deputies were sent to the 17000 block of South Ridgerunner Drive at about 6:30 p.m., according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Joseph Clark was detained as he was leaving the residence. Authorities initially reported that Noelle Clark appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound, but court documents released later described evidence of a beating and stabbing. Officials have not publicly explained the difference between the initial description and the injuries detailed in the court records.

According to an interim criminal complaint cited by local news organizations, investigators believe the assault began in one of the children’s bedrooms. Deputies reported finding blood in the room, along with a kitchen knife and a belt. Investigators said the belt appeared consistent with some of Noelle Clark’s injuries. The records also described a chest wound and significant trauma to her head. Those details remain allegations contained in the criminal case and have not been proven in court.

Investigators allege Noelle Clark was then moved through the house and into the garage. Authorities reported finding marks and other evidence that led them to believe a vehicle had been driven over part of her body. She was found covered with a blanket in the garage. Court records said she showed clear signs of pregnancy and appeared to be in the second or third trimester.

The couple’s children, ages 2 and 5, were found inside the home and were not physically injured, according to authorities. FOX 10 Phoenix reported that the children were later placed in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety. Officials have not released their identities or additional information about their circumstances.

Court records also describe statements Joseph Clark allegedly made after he was detained. Investigators said he claimed his wife had subjected him to electrical torture over several years. Authorities reported finding no visible injuries that supported those allegations, and no evidence substantiating the claims has been publicly announced. His statements are part of the investigative record and do not establish what occurred before Noelle Clark’s death.

Investigators also alleged that evidence inside the home suggested Joseph Clark had considered disposing of his wife’s body. Authorities have not said that such an attempt was completed. The allegation, like the other claims described in court records, will be subject to the criminal court process.

Joseph Clark was booked on two counts of second-degree murder and was being held on a $1 million bond, according to reports based on court and law enforcement records. Available reporting did not establish that he had entered a plea. The charges are allegations, and Clark is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has said the investigation remains active. Local reporting indicated Clark was expected to return to court on Oct. 20 as the case moves forward. Authorities have not publicly announced a motive or released additional findings resolving the discrepancy between the initial report of a gunshot wound and the injuries later described in court documents.
