A 79-year-old military veteran in Los Angeles was hospitalized with serious leg injuries after a violent confrontation with a naked intruder, which resulted in the intruder’s death. The incident occurred early Friday morning in Studio City, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The veteran, a well-known figure in the neighborhood, intervened after hearing screams from a neighboring property around 7 a.m. near the 4500 block of Tujunga Avenue.
The attempted burglary took place as the San Fernando Valley neighborhood was beginning its day. Two women were inside the targeted home when the intruder forced his way in. The veteran, who lives nearby, was injured before he fired his handgun. Detectives are still trying to piece together the sequence of events, but early evidence suggests a violent physical altercation preceded the shooting.
The incident has raised concerns due to recent break-ins in the Valley, prompting swift response from patrol officers and homicide investigators. Neighbors dialed 911 just after 7 a.m. Friday, reporting a disturbance and a naked man yelling in the street. Officers arrived to find a man with gunshot wounds and the elderly man with serious leg injuries on a driveway. The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene, while the veteran was rushed to a hospital in serious condition.
Witnesses described a brief but intense fight. According to Capt. Warner Castillo, the suspect lifted the 79-year-old veteran and body-slammed him onto the concrete driveway. The veteran then fired his gun, hitting the intruder in the chest and head. A nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing both men on the ground just before additional shots were fired.
The identity of the intruder has not been released pending family notification. Detectives found a handgun at the scene and are reviewing footage from nearby security cameras that captured a naked man walking across the street and yelling moments before the break-in. Investigators have confirmed that there was no prior relationship between the intruder and the residents of the home or the veteran who intervened.
The incident has drawn attention as it follows other high-profile home-intrusion reports in the western San Fernando Valley this week. While the LAPD has stated that the Studio City shooting appears to be an isolated incident involving unusual circumstances, they are reviewing calls for service in the area to determine if any patterns exist.
The investigation is ongoing, with detectives planning to formally interview the hospitalized veteran, review ballistic evidence, and await autopsy results from the county medical examiner. The findings will be reviewed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the shooting falls within self-defense under California law. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and no outstanding suspects are being sought.
