70-Year-Old Woman Shot During Morning Walk

Kevin Millares pleaded not guilty after deputies said a 70-year-old woman was shot near an Orlando bus stop.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 27-year-old man has pleaded not guilty after authorities said a 70-year-old woman was shot three times near a bus stop during her morning walk in Orange County.

Kevin Millares is charged with attempted first-degree murder in the June 8 shooting in the 1000 block of Egan Drive, near Hager Way, in Orlando’s Azalea Park area. Deputies said the woman survived after being taken to a hospital in critical condition. Prosecutors are seeking to keep Millares jailed without bond while the case moves through court.

The shooting was reported around 9 a.m. June 8, when Orange County sheriff’s deputies were called to Egan Drive. Early reports described the victim as a woman in her 70s who had been shot while waiting near a bus stop. Investigators later said she had been on a daily walk through her neighborhood when a man she did not know came toward her. According to an affidavit filed in Orange County, the woman told investigators she turned away as the man approached, but he continued toward her and shot her three times in the back.

A witness told investigators he was outside his home when he saw a shirtless man wearing black shorts in the area. The witness said the man appeared suspicious, so he went inside and got his own gun. When he returned outside, the affidavit said, he saw the man walk up to the woman and shoot her. The witness told authorities he did not hear either person say anything before the gunfire. After the shooting, the witness called 911 as the shooter ran from the area.

Deputies and paramedics responded, and the woman was taken to a hospital. Investigators said she was able to speak with officers there. She told them she did not know the man and did not know why she had been shot, according to the court filing. Orange County Sheriff John Mina later said the woman was expected to survive. He said one bullet came close to vital organs but did not cause a fatal injury.

The shooting led to a large law enforcement response in the Azalea Park neighborhood. Deputies later surrounded a home near Flanders Way and Faber Drive, only blocks from the bus stop. SWAT deputies, armored vehicles, robots and a drone were used during the response. Authorities later said the suspect was not found inside that home, and officials did not immediately confirm whether the scene was connected to the shooting investigation.

Investigators said they later identified Millares as the suspect. Court records cited by authorities said deputies found an unspent .380-caliber bullet inside a magazine at a residence connected to the investigation. Authorities said the ammunition matched the type of bullet found at the shooting scene. Investigators also reported finding black shorts and black-and-white slides in a bedroom, items they said matched video of the suspect walking in the area before the shooting.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Millares was arrested June 23 in New York by the U.S. Marshals Service after leaving the Orlando area. He was held at Rikers Island after the arrest, according to local reports. The arrest came about two weeks after deputies first released information about the shooting and said they were looking for the person responsible.

Millares appeared in court Thursday and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors asked a judge to hold him without bond until trial. The attempted murder charge remains pending, and no trial date was immediately announced. Court proceedings are expected to focus on the witness account, surveillance video, physical evidence and the woman’s statement to investigators.

Neighbors told local reporters the shooting shocked the area, which they described as a place where families, children and residents are often outside. Evidence photographed near the scene included bloodstains, bullet holes and personal items left near the bus stop. Authorities have not released the victim’s name.

The case remains active in Orange County court. Millares is presumed innocent unless proven guilty, and his next scheduled court appearance is expected to determine how the case proceeds.
