In a shocking incident of violence, a mother lost her life and her two young children were left critically injured in their Brooklyn residence on Wednesday. The 43-year-old woman was brutally attacked with a hammer in her room at a shared apartment in Sunset Park. Her children, a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl, were also found severely injured in the same room.
The gruesome discovery was made by police officers responding to a 911 call about an ongoing assault. The call came in just before 2 p.m., leading officers to the second-floor room where the victims were found. A 47-year-old man, attempting to leave the premises, was apprehended by the police.
The suspect, found with blood on his clothes, also resided in the same apartment, sharing a room with his 9-year-old son. The third room in the apartment was rented by another individual. The motive behind the horrifying act of violence remains unclear.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, addressing the media, described the incident as a “horrific and senseless act of violence.” He expressed his condolences to the family and assured that the entire community’s prayers were with them during this difficult time.
The mother and her children were rushed to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the mother succumbed to her injuries. Her children remain in critical condition. A blood-stained hammer, believed to be the weapon used in the attack, was recovered from the scene by the police.
The suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday night and transported to the 72nd Precinct stationhouse for further questioning. Charges against him are pending, and his identity has not been released to the public.
