Mother Beat 6-Year-Old With Hammer

A Kentucky woman, 40, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a brutal attack on her 6-year-old daughter. Zeinab Abdi was taken into custody last Thursday after allegedly striking her child multiple times in the head with a hammer, in an incident witnessed by the victim’s sibling.

The Louisville Metro Police Department’s 2nd Division responded to a distress call at a residence on Wilson Avenue around 12:49 p.m. last Thursday. The call indicated that a child had been assaulted by her mother with a hammer. Upon arrival, first responders found a 6-year-old girl inside the house with severe head injuries.

The child, whose identity has not been disclosed by the authorities, was found to have sustained multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds from the blunt force trauma. She was immediately transported to Norton Children’s Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition. As of Friday morning, the child’s condition remained critical.

Given the severity of the child’s injuries, the police department’s homicide unit was called to the scene and took over the investigation. Abdi was subsequently arrested in relation to the alleged assault on her daughter.

In a post-Miranda statement, Abdi reportedly admitted to frequently losing control of her anger. She confessed to becoming overly angry on the day of the incident and striking her daughter multiple times with a hammer. The suspect’s son, whose name and age have not been disclosed, corroborated this account during an interview, recounting a chilling moment when his mother said, “let me finish her,” while attempting to return to the victim after the assault.

Abdi is currently detained at the Louisville Metro Detention Center. Details about her bond and court appearance scheduled for Friday morning were not immediately available.

The shocking incident has left the local community in disbelief. Neighbors interviewed by a local CBS affiliate expressed their shock and horror at the allegations. One neighbor described the incident as “terrible,” while another said the news gave her “cold chills,” and called it “disgusting.”
