Missing Father and 4-Year-Old Son Found Dead

The discovery in Gainesville, Texas, followed an Amber Alert and surveillance footage that appeared to show the pair at a local business.

GAINESVILLE, Texas — A missing Oklahoma father and his 4-year-old son were found dead Wednesday in Gainesville after an interstate search that began when the child was not returned to his mother, authorities said.

Caleb Furley, 25, and his son, Andres “Harry” Furley, had been missing from Norman, Oklahoma, since Sunday evening. Authorities first issued an Endangered Missing Advisory before an Amber Alert was activated for Andres. Norman police later confirmed that the father and child had been found in Gainesville. Gainesville police said a medical examiner was working to formally identify a deceased man and small child discovered during the Texas search.

The case began after Norman police were contacted Oct. 12 about the missing father and son. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s initial advisory said Andres had last been seen with his father at about 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in Norman. Authorities said an extensive search had failed to locate them and that there was concern for their welfare.

The case was later elevated to an Amber Alert. According to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety alert, Caleb Furley had not appeared for an exchange of Andres with the child’s mother. The alert said a warrant had been issued for Caleb Furley on an allegation of parental kidnapping. The warrant was an accusation and had not resulted in a criminal conviction before the deaths were reported.

The search moved south into North Texas after a relative contacted Gainesville police early Wednesday with information that the father and child had been seen at a business in the 1500 block of North Grand Avenue. Police said the pair were believed to have been at the business at about 3 p.m. Monday.

Gainesville Police Chief Kevin Phillips said officers had previously been called to the same area after someone reported what appeared to be a suspicious interaction involving an adult man and a child. Officers searched the area and used a drone but did not locate them. Police also looked for a vehicle believed to be connected to the pair.

Investigators returned to the business Wednesday and reviewed surveillance video. Police said the footage appeared to show Caleb and Andres walking away from the area Monday afternoon. Officers then expanded their search of nearby locations. During that effort, an investigator found the bodies of an adult man and a small child.

Norman police subsequently said Caleb and Andres had been found in Gainesville, while Gainesville authorities said formal identification of the bodies remained with the medical examiner. The distinction reflects separate law enforcement and forensic identification processes. Authorities had not announced a cause or manner of death as of Wednesday.

The Oklahoma Amber Alert had identified a silver 2012 Dodge Ram quad-cab pickup with an Oklahoma license plate as the vehicle associated with the search. Andres was described in the alert as 3 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 40 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Caleb was listed as 5 feet, 10 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

The Texas Rangers were assisting Gainesville police with the death investigation. Authorities had not publicly said what happened after the father and child were seen near the Gainesville business, whether another person was involved or how the two died. Those questions remained under investigation as police and the medical examiner continued their work.

The University of Oklahoma confirmed to OU Daily that Caleb Furley was a student and said the university was cooperating with law enforcement. The discovery ended the active missing-person search but opened a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. No additional findings about the cause or manner of death had been announced by Wednesday night.
