Missing Doctor Found Dead in Ravine

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office has disclosed information regarding the unfortunate demise of Dr. Carol Burger Poe, a 67-year-old physician who was reported missing earlier this week. Dr. Poe, a Parkinson’s disease patient, disappeared while on a Tuesday hike with her two dogs in the Horse Pasture area off Highway 178. The search for her began on Tuesday night but was halted due to safety issues related to fallen trees and debris from the storm Helene, which made the conditions too dangerous for night operations. This suspension in the search operation led to increased worry within the community.

The search operation resumed on Wednesday, and the teams were able to locate one of Dr. Poe’s dogs, along with her dog treats and car keys. These items were instrumental in guiding the ongoing search efforts. Unfortunately, Dr. Poe was found deceased on an embankment late Friday afternoon around 3:45 p.m. The location was near where the previous items had been discovered, indicating that she hadn’t strayed far from that area.

Authorities have confirmed that Dr. Poe’s death was the result of a fall of 40-50 feet into a ravine in the remote wooded area near Camp Hannon. The fall caused multiple blunt force injuries, and the coroner’s office has classified the death as accidental. The second dog of Dr. Poe was found alive, providing a small comfort to those involved in the search and Dr. Poe’s family, who had been grappling with days of uncertainty and fear.

The incident involving Dr. Poe highlights the unpredictable risks associated with outdoor activities, particularly for individuals with health conditions that could compromise their safety. It underscores the need for caution when exploring unfamiliar or rugged landscapes.

The community of Pickens County is now mourning the loss of a respected physician and neighbor. Family and friends are remembering Dr. Poe’s personal and professional contributions. Her tragic death serves as a reminder of the inherent risks of outdoor activities, particularly for those with health conditions, and the importance of taking necessary precautions when venturing into unfamiliar or rugged terrains.
