Police said multiple gunmen emerged from two vehicles and opened fire on a group near an alley Sunday afternoon.
CHICAGO — One person was killed and six others were wounded Sunday when multiple gunmen opened fire on a group near an alley in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said, in a daytime attack that also ended with a wounded driver crashing into a CTA bus.
The shooting happened about 12:17 p.m. Sept. 13 in the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue, just south of Chicago Avenue. Chicago police said six people were standing outside near an alley when two vehicles approached. Multiple armed people got out and fired at the group. No arrests had been announced as investigators worked to determine who carried out the shooting and why.
All six people standing near the alley were struck by gunfire, according to police. One man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Daily Horn, citing the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, identified the person killed as Michael Howard Jr., 18. Established initial police reports had described the fatal victim as a man whose age had not yet been released.
The other five people in the group included a 14-year-old boy and men ages 18, 21, 24 and 26, police said. The 14-year-old was shot in the thighs and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. An 18-year-old man was struck in the shoulder and went to Stroger, while a 21-year-old man who was shot in the leg was also taken there. Both were initially listed in good condition.
A 24-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and stomach and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to police. A 26-year-old man who was shot in the foot made his own way to Stroger Hospital and was initially reported in good condition. Authorities had not publicly released updated conditions for all of the surviving victims.
The violence also reached a woman who police said was inside a vehicle nearby. The 30-year-old woman was shot in the hip and then crashed her vehicle into a Chicago Transit Authority bus. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and was initially listed in good condition. The bus driver was taken to a hospital for observation. Police did not immediately report serious injuries to other people aboard the bus.
The shooting brought a large police and emergency response to the area. Investigators examined the stretch around North Christiana Avenue while officers restricted access near the shooting scene and the bus crash. CBS News Chicago reported that evidence markers covered part of the area and that a man who returned after the shooting told police he had dropped two phones while fleeing the gunfire. The phones had been collected as evidence, according to the report.
Police said two unidentified vehicles were involved in the attack, but authorities had not publicly released a detailed description of the suspected gunmen. Investigators also had not announced a motive or said whether the group near the alley had been specifically targeted. The number of shooters, their identities and their relationship, if any, to the victims remained under investigation.
The attack came less than two months after another multiple-victim shooting in Humboldt Park. On July 26, six people were wounded when gunfire struck a group in the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue, according to Chicago police. Two men were initially listed in critical condition in that shooting, while four other victims were reported in good condition. Authorities have announced no connection between the July attack and Sunday’s shooting.
The Sept. 13 shooting was also among several violent incidents recorded across Chicago over the weekend. Police reported multiple shootings involving victims ranging from teenagers to adults. The Humboldt Park attack was one of the deadliest, with seven people struck by gunfire and one victim dying from his wounds.
Detectives continued investigating the Humboldt Park shooting as of Monday. Police had not announced any arrests, identified the suspected gunmen or released a motive. Authorities also had not publicly provided updated medical conditions for all six surviving shooting victims.
