Man Found Shot to Death Behind Home

Several people were detained for questioning after police responded to gunfire near Charleston and Lamb boulevards early Wednesday.

LAS VEGAS — A man was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the backyard of an east Las Vegas home early Wednesday after police received reports of gunfire, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and homicide detectives are investigating.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the 4500 block of East Ogden Avenue at about 4:29 a.m. Aug. 5 after dispatchers received a ShotSpotter notification and a 911 call reporting gunfire. The residential neighborhood is near Charleston and Lamb boulevards. Several people connected to the residence were detained so detectives could question them, but police had not announced an arrest or identified a suspected shooter in initial reports.

Officers located the wounded man in the backyard and began providing emergency aid, according to the initial police account. The man was pronounced dead at the property. Authorities had not publicly released his name, and initial reports described him only as an adult believed to be in his 30s or 40s. Formal identification typically depends on notification procedures and information released by the Clark County coroner.

Homicide Lt. Robert Price said several people who came from the residence around the time of the shooting were detained while officers secured the scene and investigators began interviews. Police emphasized that being detained for questioning did not mean those individuals had been arrested or charged in connection with the killing.

Early reports differed on the exact number of people being questioned. One account placed the number at six or seven, while another described only several people as being detained. Police had not publicly identified any of them or explained what relationship, if any, they had to the man who died.

Investigators also had not disclosed what led to the gunfire. It remained unclear whether the victim lived at the house, was visiting the property or arrived there under other circumstances. Police had not announced a motive or publicly said whether investigators recovered a firearm at the scene.

Price described the shooting as an isolated incident and said investigators did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the surrounding community. Officers remained at the property as homicide detectives processed the scene, interviewed people and worked to establish what happened before the man was shot.

The investigation remained active as of Friday. Police had not announced an arrest, publicly identified a suspected gunman or released the victim’s identity. Additional information about the man’s identity and cause and manner of death had not been publicly released in the initial reports reviewed.
