Man Found Dead Near Disneyland Entrance

Police said the 65-year-old man appeared to have died of natural causes and investigators found no indication of foul play.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A 65-year-old man was found dead Sunday afternoon on a sidewalk near Disneyland Resort’s south entrance, prompting a temporary closure as Anaheim police and coroner officials responded to the scene.

Anaheim police responded at about 1:40 p.m. Oct. 25 near the theme park’s south entrance off Katella Avenue, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Eric Anderson. The man’s name had not been released. Police said he was known to local authorities and was experiencing homelessness.

Early reports described an active investigation after the man was discovered near a large Disneyland Resort entrance sign along Katella Avenue. Anaheim Fire and Rescue personnel also responded, and paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to reports citing authorities and emergency personnel.

Police temporarily secured the immediate area while waiting for coroner officials. The response affected a section of the sidewalk near the resort entrance, with pedestrians directed away from the scene while authorities worked. It was not immediately clear from the initial reports whether the exact location where the man was found was on Disneyland property or directly beside it.

Initial accounts said the cause of death had not been determined while investigators examined the scene. Later Sunday, however, Anderson said the death appeared to have resulted from natural causes and that officers did not suspect foul play. No evidence had been publicly disclosed suggesting the man was the victim of a crime.

Some early coverage reported that a beer can was found near the man. Authorities had not established that the item was connected to his death, and police did not cite it when describing their preliminary assessment that the death appeared natural. No official toxicology findings or final medical cause of death had been released.

The man’s identity remained withheld Sunday. Authorities also had not released information about any relatives or additional personal details. The Orange County coroner was expected to handle the formal determination of the cause and manner of death following the initial police response.

The incident occurred outside one of Southern California’s busiest tourist destinations, but reports indicated that the police activity was concentrated around the sidewalk and entrance area. There was no indication that the death involved an incident inside Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure.

Police did not announce any arrests or identify a criminal suspect in connection with the death. The strongest public assessment from authorities Sunday was that the man appeared to have died from natural causes and that foul play was not suspected. A final cause of death had not been publicly released.
