A tragic incident unfolded at a wildlife park in Nigeria when a seasoned lion handler was fatally attacked by a lion during an after-hours feeding demonstration. The 35-year-old zookeeper, Babaji Daule, was conducting a feeding session for guests who had arrived late at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park.
Daule, who was known for his comfort and familiarity with the animals, had left the safety gate open while feeding the lion. The park’s management reported that the lion attacked Daule, inflicting fatal injuries to his neck. The lion was subsequently shot to prevent further harm to Daule’s body.
The park’s management emphasized that the incident occurred outside of the park’s standard feeding routine. The park typically has strict protocols in place to ensure the safety of its employees, visitors, and animals. However, it remains unclear whether Daule had the necessary permissions to conduct the feeding session after the park’s closing hours.
According to a statement from police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, Daule had failed to secure the locks and barricade the lion’s enclosure before approaching the cage. This oversight allowed the lion to escape and attack Daule, resulting in his untimely death.
The park’s management expressed their condolences to Daule’s family following the tragic incident. They also reassured the public of their commitment to safety, stating that they would continue to prioritize the well-being of their employees, visitors, and animals.
The incident has raised questions about the safety protocols in place at the wildlife park and the risks associated with handling wild animals. It serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wild animals, even those in captivity, and the importance of adhering to safety procedures at all times.
