Internationally acclaimed pop sensation Lady Gaga recently shared her personal battle with mental health issues during the production of the 2017 film, “A Star Is Born.” The Grammy-award winning artist disclosed that she was on mood stabilizers, specifically lithium, throughout the film’s production. Lithium is a medication typically used to treat bipolar disorder, but Gaga has not publicly confirmed any such diagnosis.
Upon wrapping up the film, Gaga embarked on her Joanne World Tour, which spanned from August 2017 to February 2018. It was during this time that she faced a severe mental health crisis. The pop star openly shared that her sister expressed worry about her mental state, prompting Gaga to cancel the tour and seek psychiatric help.
The “Poker Face” singer characterized the experience as frightening, confessing there was a point when she questioned her ability to bounce back. However, she managed to get the necessary help and was feeling improved by the time “A Star Is Born” received eight nominations at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019. Gaga clinched the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Shallow.”
Reflecting on her mental health journey, Gaga expressed gratitude for her survival, recognizing the potential seriousness of mental health crises. She now views herself as a “healthy, whole person,” attributing a significant part of her recovery to her fiancé, Michael Polansky. The couple started dating in 2020, and Polansky popped the question in 2024.
Gaga acknowledges Polansky’s genuine affection and care for her as a crucial element in her healing process. She revealed that his commitment to her well-being helped her understand the worth of her life.
In the same interview with Rolling Stone, Gaga also touched on the disappointing box office performance of her 2024 film, “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Despite the negative feedback from fans and critics, Gaga maintained a positive attitude about the situation, stating that she initially found humor in the film’s poor reception.
